I took off of work a little early and went down to get some Cherry Blossom goodness before all the rain comes. Since my good buddy Christina couldn't make it to downtown Portland, I promised her a dedication shot. So I kept looking for that shot that I could dedicate. I saw this fallen blossom group just staring up at me, and so I got out my macro lens. I laid on flat on the ground and took this C-Style.

The emergence of each season is so exciting for me. By summers end I'm anxious to see all the fall colors and the cooler weather. As winter sets in I long for cold and the possibility of snow (having Christmas on the way helps as well!) and then long about March I start become antsy for spring to really hit. Warmth, sunshine, blooming and fresh new green. And just around the corner is that deliscious hot weather that is summer! How do I choose which one I love the best? They all have equal weight for different reasons.

But the spring buds and blooms always bring such joy to me. Happiness. Awakening. New possibilities. And pretty colors as well! :-)

Happy Spring my friends! Here's to all the possibilities!

To keep myself out of trouble, I have to dedicate this shot to my good friend Lynn. She met up with me to shoot Cherry Blossoms on Sunday. Unfortunately it was completely overcast, which made for poor blossom shooting. I decided to get off work early and make it to the waterfront on Monday. The sun was out with some amazing cloud action allowing for far better blossom shooting. Lynn couldn't join me this go round, so I promised her a dedication shot. I laid on flat on the ground and took this LM-Style.

I looked for the pink lady, but she was nowhere to be found.

This is not the same group of blossoms as the other shot.

If you look closely, you can see the kitty in the window. =)

I liked so much about this scene when it caught my eye: the reflection of the fence and trees in the window, the kitty, the check mark composition on the branches juxtaposed with the horizontal siding of the house... I just think it all comes together nicely somehow.

This is on SW Oak Street. It was converted this year to have this buffered bike lane. The bike lane is 7-feet wide plus a buffer between the moving traffic and parked cars. 10-feet total -- great for moving freight by bicycle.

Did anyone else ever watch Rocko's Modern Life like I did (obsessively)? There was a great episode, set up like a musical, and the big opening number had Heifer running around singing (badly) at the top of his lungs, "SPRING CLEANING! SPRING CLEANING!"

That's sort of how I feel with the warm weather (I don't give a damn that it's raining out right now because it isn't snow), the flowers, and now, the surest sign of spring in Portland (and you thought it was the Saturday market or the homeless trading in their comforters for the lighter-weight newspapers), the Cherry Blossoms! It's a sickness, waiting for them to bloom, driving by, discussing with other people when they'll hit their peak. A sickness, I say. And yet...there I was this weekend.

Saturday night at the blossoms Patrick and I ran into Zeb and Wendy, The Speak, and Manyfires (Dani) and then were at the blossoms this morning with Crisse (Tildabelle) who then shot the blossoms with Ara. God knows who else I just missed by moments on either day, we certainly saw entire flocks of photographers.

This morning a family asked us to take their photo, and seeing the three of us with our gear asked if it was a photography class. I had to laugh and say, "Nope, just friends out shooting together!" Although, funny, Crisse and I were unintentionally wearing matching jackets - pink with white speed-racer stripes down the arms. We may have looked like a club, a bad-ass, pink wearing, camera wielding, club for blonds under 5'5" with our token dude Patrick at our side.

SPRING SPRING SPRING!!! It's HERE!!! And now I want to pull out my Rocko DVDs.

If you ever visit Goldendale, WA make sure you don't turn right on Centerville Rd. I was driving around looking for places to photograph windmills, and from a lower vantage point at the southern end of Maryhill Loops Rd, just off Hwy 14, I had seen cars driving east-west along the ridge to my north. I looked at my GPS, and figred that Centerville Rd was what I was seeing. I followed my GPS up there, and after turning right on Centerville it turned into a dirt road shortly after leaving Hwy 97. I didn't see any signs, gates, guardshacks, or anything to indicate it was private propery. I followed the road for about two miles, stopped, and set up this shot. About 45 minutes later the police came and lit me up. I politely explained what I was doing, and after learning that I was on private property, I said that I would be happy to leave. It was clear to me from the beginning that this was one of those cops to which every answer you give is the wrong answer by default. A good 15 minutes went by, and the deputy came back with my ID, and a notice to appear in court next week for 2nd Degree Criminal Trespass, a misdemeanor. Great. Maybe I should show the judge the photo?

This effect is achieved in camera at the time the exposure was created. I hand held a Hasselblad mount, 80mm Zeiss Plannar at f2.8 about an inch in front of a Nikon D50 camera body (with no lens attached). I wanted to see if I could hack a tilt shift effect without using a tilt shift lens. BW conversion and some toning was done in Lightroom. No photoshop. Does anyone know if this technique has a name? I'mma call it "hack shift" for now.

I had an opportunity to listen to a talk by Susan Burnstine at the Newspace yesterday afternoon and it left me very inspired to get experimental. If you're not familiar with her work, it is truly amazing.
