ohhellyeah

Seriously - I was going straight home after work. I even putzed around the First Friday booths on Main St until 7.

And then I saw the sky on my way home. I sighed a bit and decided it wouldn't hurt me to sit one out. But when I got home and could see the whole sky there was no question about it. Haul ass to the river as quickly as possible.

Yay tires.

Yay pilings.

Yay three day weekend.

promises promises

I was promised a green plastic shopping cart stuck in the mud, but I was out of position when the color hit. I had just been talking with Victor about how the layers of clouds had potential, and then I didn't take my own advice. Luckily he's a gentleman and got me looking in the right direction eventually. :)

So I raced/stumbled back to this spot only to have my memory card fail. Between the curses and the almost-falls on the slippery rocks I got a new card in and managed 4 shots before the color faded.

This is a result of two of them. Manually blended in CS3.

Thanks for the invite buddy - it was good to see you guys again. And no charge for the clouds this time.

back to the beginning

This is the first shot I took of the midway this year, unless you count the shot I took to meter for it. Now that I've been shooting for a couple of years, not everything is a first. In fact this was technically the third year I've shot the fair.

Here's to lots of fifths and ninths and seventeenths.

I swear the only reason I went back here again was to take the pinhole.....

As the sun went down, all the interesting clouds were south of the river so instead of heading down to the water level I stayed up top for the view.

I know, I know I've done this shot before. But that was 46 pages ago and no one remembers but me.

I don't rough it while I'm camping. I have an air mattress that fits in the tent and if need be, fits in the back of the car. There was no need to resort to this old rusty boxspring - in fact other than the night I sprung a leak I slept pretty well all trip long.

It was nice to get home to my own bed though. Memory foam is my friend.

fortunate once again

For some people, when their luck finally runs out it's a very ugly scene. For me, it looked like this.

I got my stuff together and left straight from work - on the odd chance that none of the 428 trillion fishermen out today hadn't made off with my phone yet.

With the accident on 84 and the paving they're doing, it took me over and hour and a half to go 40 miles..... So with very little time (and light) left I started searching. I'm pretty sure this exact spot is where I left it, but either I'm wrong or somebody just got a Blackberry they didn't have to fight the thorns for....

Oh well. My luck had to run out sometime. If you knew how long I'd had this coming you'd be surprised....

:) .. Back to the money tree to pick some for that new phone I didn't know I needed...

So needless to say if I had your phone number, it's gone now. So that's the new reason why I'm not calling.

Yes - I have one!

The shot I was going to post is landscape orientation and has the sunrise flare, but the log is coming out of the middle of the foreground into the water and it seriously looks like a penis.

I stared for a long time (deciding of course!) and just couldn't do it. I have too many pervy friends.

expectations revisited

Expectations were abounding when I picked up this camera. I have some Flickr contacts who do it very well, and some of them had mentioned that shooting a pinhole might fit my style and that I should try it.

dot dot dot

I may have mentioned before that I sometimes get strange looks a lot while I'm shooting. Standing in the ocean is the least of it. Laying on the sidewalk at the Amtrak station isn't the worst either. I'm a firm believer that pride should never get in the way of a shot. The phrase "I'm going to look like a moron!" is a deterrent for some, but not for me.

But the strange looks with the pinhole were different. Lots of double takes. And some very rugged curious climber dudes out at Smith Rock where even the hermit side of me couldn't complain too much. Normally I just get the weird look, but people don't say much - but everyone wanted to know about the pinhole.

Thankfully their ignorance made me seem damn near omniscient. And I like it better that way. :)

Here's to continued expectations.....

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement - and again to Don for the lending of the camera (no Jim, I didn't exactly bless it... don't ask...) And a big huge thanks to Erik for the absolutely nicest comment ever written in the history of the webverse. You are too kind. :)

For the rest of you - don't worry, the coastal water motion shots will resume tomorrow as scheduled.

technicalities

The sign didn't say anything about bitches in heat, so I figured Sheri was allowed.....

:)

My editor needed some shots for the Summer Guide and suggested a girl in a cowboy hat riding the sturgeon down at Esther Short Park. I knew Sheri would be perfect, so away we went. Well.... it was the Republican convention down there tonight.

At first I cursed them (no spitting this time) and we went and tried some other spots. But we weren't about to let a few inbreds spoil our good time, so we braved the wilds of the park anyway. At least when I'm shooting a model, the strange stares are mostly for them. :)

imminent glory

I love to go and decorate the floats for the Rose Parade. I always end up missing the actual event, so it's nice to see them beforehand and see how they come together. It's also nice to get glue all over your clothes and hands. It feels like grade school art class, and nothing bad ever happened there, right?

I snuck in tonight past the volunteer registration. One very knowing old lady tried to shoo me out, but I always say with the right camera and the right shoes you can get in anywhere.... :)

I'll miss it again this year, but for an excellent cause - solitude.

Just another day at the knee wash

I like to make people laugh. Random people - the grocery store clerk or the person in front of me in line. Hell, I can make a gay waiter blush.... So I had a massage therapy appointment tonight. This chick rocks, but she really works you over. I told her that I was going to take a fisheye photo of her thumb for her business cards...

We talked a little more today and it turns out she's a concert photographer! She was talking about bands she's shot over the years and how one guy in particular was really arrogant. I half laughed and when she asked why I told her I was a bit afflicted with the arrogance bug. She said "No way!" and I copped my best attitude and said "What, you think you know me because you've seen me naked? What the hell?"

She laughed.

Then she made me cry.

Life is good.

Victor gave me this book! Actually - two of them. Thanks Victor!!!! Talk about a happy day for me. :)

The author is not above the absurd and is nicely sarcastic (in a cloud book? ... yes - in a cloud book). It is a very interesting read.

As I was wandering back through my cloud filled trip from last year I found this interesting specimen from the edge of Alvord Lake. Now I can classify genus, species, variety, and supplemental features.

:)

........................................................................................................................

I am the daughter of Earth and Water,
And the nursling of the Sky:
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores;
I change, but I cannot die.
For after the rain, when with never a stain
The pavilion of heaven is bare,
And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleams
Build up the blue dome of air,
I silently laugh at my own cenotaph,
And out of the caverns of rain,
Like a child from the womb, like a ghost from the tomb,
I arise, and unbuild it again.

alternate energies

I grabbed my lunch to go today and was going to eat it at the park when I noticed nice clouds and a train load of windmill blades waiting to get the heck out of Vancouver. This time I actually remembered the step down ring for my 18-200mm so I could use the ND filters with the zoom.

I zoomed in and was shooting down the line of blades and decided to try and get some traffic in the shot. I think the juxtaposition of the log truck and the train is interesting - representing two different forms of energy. Wind power is not without its problems, but at least it doesn't make me sick like the sight of a fully loaded log truck. And let's face it folks, aesthetics is really what it's all about, right? The prettier of two evils?
